A View of Medieval Life (7 pp)
[ send me this paper ]
Labels in any time period tend to fluctuate -we may call the Middle Ages that period of time from the twelfth century to the fifteenth century. An art historian would label these early, high and late Gothic, but for the sake of discussion we will use "Medieval," to encompass both. A large part of the population at this time was illiterate, but that does not mean that they did not love stories like the rest of us. What has survived from that period are the stories, in the forms of the works of Christine de Pisan (1363 - 1431) and Jean Foissart ( c 1330 - c1404). Yet we will see different pictures of the same society from their point of view as we examine their works. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Abuse Alert In The Dental Industry
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. Children are often the unwitting victims of domestic violence, even though they are not the specific targets of the adult's anger. Statistics show that in America, a child is reported abused or neglected every thirteen seconds, which equates to more than two point seven million children each and every year. This figure, more than three times as many as was reported in 1980, reflects a disturbing trend toward uncontrolled acts of domestic violence. The writer discusses how dental healthcare professionals can first recognize child abuse in their patients and then deal with the moral and ethical obligations of reporting such abuse. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Adrienne Rich's "When We Dead Awaken: Writing As Re-Vision"
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Carrying forth the burden that has plagued women for centuries, Adrienne Rich's When We Dead Awaken: Writing As Re-Vision attempts to alter the historical concept of patriarchy within the boundaries of contemporary society. In the author's opinion, the age-old gender molds are ripe for revamping and bringing into the present frame of consciousness. No longer are women to be made to suffer through an oppressive existence simply because it is the right thing to do; rather, Rich paints a new picture of a strong, intelligent woman who will not be coerced by the irrational expectations of an oppressive, patriarchal society. No additional sources cited.

Ally McBeal: Cultural Values And Behavior
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The notoriety of Ally McBeal is not that surprising if one considers the standard elements of contemporary popular culture that it depicts. Indeed, the extent to which this particular program highlights such cultural values as capitalism and individualism, while at the same time devaluing certain ways of being, lends to the show's credibility as a reflection of society. Money and self-centeredness are two of the primary cultural values that stand out in virtually every episode; amidst the young law firm is a collection of people whose ideals are as shallow as a child's. That everything revolves around the amassing of great quantities of money reflects the manner by which society has rearranged priorities by placing superficiality at the top of the list. Add to that a significant sense of feminism gone awry and it all adds up to a television program that offends virtually every possible social group. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing themes consisted and found within Morrison’s “Sula”, Anzaldua’s “Borderlands” and the poetry and writings of Namjoshi and Hanscombe and Willis. Themes of cultural dichotomy, opposing forces, self and identity are consistent throughout writings by women minorities. In Toni Morrison’s “Sula” and Gloria Anzaldua’s “Borderlands” both describe situations of women struggling in cultures in which continuously opposing forces and cultural identities lead them to dichotomies which in some cases end in a negative direction as in “Sula” but in other instances lead to creativity as described in Anzaldua’s “Borderlands” and the Aztec elements of tlilli, tlapilli which symbolize writing and wisdom and allow for the bridge to be attained through the gods and spirit world and that which lies beneath. The themes found in the writings of Morrison and Anzaldua are also used in the poetry of Suniti Namjoshi and Gillian Hanscombe’s found in their work “Flesh and Paper” and in Susan Willis’ essay in the text “Making a Difference”. Are Women More “People-Oriented” Leaders?
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses the time-honored assumption, at least in modern times, that women are more people-oriented leaders than men. Are women more people-oriented and greater believers in “participative” management? There is only one definitive answer and it is not particularly satisfying. That answer is -- “it depends.” Many social scientists commonly maintain that there is no empirical basis for assuming that gender has a direct influence on leadership style. Others researchers are convinced that female leaders are more concerned about interpersonal relationships and use a more democratic and participative leadership style than do men. Research on the issue is examined. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
