Drug Use and Treatment of Hispanic Immigrants
[ send me this paper ]
A 24 page paper discussing the influence of culture on addiction treatment. This paper includes a 5-page section on clinical implications not contained in the shorter paper of the same name. Much of the research into drug use among Hispanics of the past has identified Hispanics only by cultural identification, without giving a clear picture of those cultural matters that can influence whether a Mexican American chooses to seek help in breaking an addiction. There are several aspects of the Mexican American culture that prevent Mexican Americans from moving along the same path of addiction resolution that individuals of other ethnic groups navigate in similar journeys. This paper discusses some of these points, including acculturization and the tradition of relying on family groups in times of crisis. Counselors need to realize that Hispanics who enter treatment likely already have used these social structures without success. Includes an abstract and an outline. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

Ecstasy
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper tracing the development of the 'designer drug' ecstasy and the events leading to its proclamation as illegal in the US, and arguing in favor of a continued ban on legal status. Proponents claim it to be harmless, but the evidence appears to indicate otherwise. Even if research did indeed come to the point that it could be concluded based on the facts at hand that there is no long-term damage (i.e., brain damage or death), the conclusion would still only be a partial one in that we are still unsure of precisely what constitutes brain damage. For the present, ecstasy's inclusion on DEA's Schedule I is one that should be continued. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Ecstasy Use As A Party Drug: Cause And Effect
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. The need for artificial stimulation has long been associated with the social circuit, inasmuch as various drugs provide an assortment of synthetically inspired sensations that take people to another mental or physical plane. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), more commonly known as ecstasy, is one of the more popular party drugs because of the favorable feelings it induces, the result of a change of the brain's neurotransmitter serotonin that controls mood. Ecstasy produces a false sense of peacefulness that compels users to interact with one another in a markedly tolerant and accepting fashion known as empathogenesis; the longing to convey love and be in the company of beauty - technically termed entactogenesis - has served to label ecstasy as the 'hug drug.' Effects of Cocaine Use on the Brain: Regions of the Brain, Neurotransmitters, Long and Short Term Effects
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper discussing the effects of cocaine use on the brain. Abstract included. Cocaine has been found to be one of the most popular and easily available addictive drugs in today’s population. The popularity of cocaine is not only in its increased availability and decreased price over the past few decades but also because of its addictive qualities. The addictive nature of cocaine is based on the neurotransmitter dopamine which is responsible for the emotional feeling of a “high” from cocaine use. Cocaine inhibits the reuptake mechanism for dopamine concentrations in the synaptic cleft on specific neurotransmitters and the resulting higher concentration leads to an increased emotional response. Short and long terms effects of cocaine use have been shown to include brain hemorrhages, seizures, hypertension, high blood pressure, tachycardia, developmental problems in “crack babies” and in some cases death. While these severe effects are due to cocaine use, other severe effects can also result from cocaine withdrawal. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
